The Most Important Question You Can Ask Yourself Daily

I get this question all the time:
“How do you do it all?”

My answer? I don’t. I can’t. I won’t. I outgrew that version of myself when I realized it was holding me back. Instead, I ask myself one question each day that gives me clarity, creates alignment, and prevents overwhelm:

What are the three things I need to do today that will help me create the success that I desire?

Why This Works

The brain thrives on focus. Research in cognitive psychology shows that when we limit our priorities to just a few key tasks, we make greater progress than when we attempt to do too much at once.

James Clear, author of Atomic Habits, emphasizes that small, consistent actions compound over time. By narrowing your focus to just three high-impact tasks each day, you avoid the trap of busy work and instead prioritize progress over motion.

Applying the Power of Three

The beauty of this question is in its versatility—you can tailor it to the areas where you want to grow:

  • As a leader
  • As a mom
  • As a teacher
  • As a business owner
  • As a creator
  • In your health
  • In your fitness
  • In your spirituality
  • In your finances

Instead of drowning in an overwhelming to-do list, simplify. Two things happen when you don’t:

  1. You end the day feeling like a failure because you didn’t get everything done.
  2. You check everything off but realize none of it moved the needle toward your real goals.

For example, organizing your pantry for the 32nd time might feel productive, but does it truly bring you closer to your biggest aspirations?

Reflection:

  • What are the three key things I need to do today to move toward my goals?
  • Am I prioritizing tasks that truly matter, or am I just staying busy?
  • What actions will generate momentum in the areas I care most about?

Action Step:

Write down the three things that will move the needle forward in your desired category. Then, commit to completing them.

Success isn’t about doing everything—it’s about doing the right things consistently.

With Clarity and Purpose,
AG
